Manhattan Brownstone

Preferring not to remove the existing fieldstone wall and the dark wood ceiling, our clients came pleading with us to create a comfortable room in which they could entertain, or sit quietly and read a book. Night after night they found themselves retreating to the bedroom because the living room felt cold. Our work was cut out for us here.

An Arts and Crafts inspired direction became our touch stone. Wallpaper panels framed with wood mouldings on the long wall, break up this vast space and provide a rhythm on which to rest your eyes. The ceiling was bleached and stained a soft gray. Custom light fixtures fill this room with soft light, while wood and upholstered furniture contrasts with the hardness of the stone. An existing dining platform is held in place by an upholstered banquette which provides needed storage shelves on the outside, and seating on the dining room side. Flea market art glass shades are made into torchieres which flank the fireplace.

These owners don't have to go to Aspen for a holiday; they can sink into their own living room sofa for aprés ski.
